Aldersgate Group reaction: Renewables auction secures record pipeline of clean energy projects

Reacting to the results of today’s Contracts for Difference renewables auction, Rachel Solomon Williams, Executive Director at the Aldersgate Group, said: “The success of this auction creates a strong foundation to build on and deliver the new government’s highly ambitious power decarbonisation targets while strengthening our energy security. The disappointing results in 2023 were a significant setback for the UK’s renewable energy sector, so ensuring this trend was reversed was an important first test for Labour as they look to generate much-needed investment, and one they seem to have passed. Focus must now turn to delivery, alongside measures that can set the groundwork to generate more projects in the future and maximise the potential of those announced today. The planning system remains a barrier to progress, slowing project connections and the development of critical grid infrastructure that allows us to maximise the potential of our renewables sector. Reform that balances the need for new infrastructure, with community engagement and the protection of nature and landscapes will be crucial. Similarly, taking steps to ensure that the UK secures the maximum economic benefit from these investments, through the creation of robust local supply chains, must be a priority. This will ensure the public are brought along on the decarbonisation journey, seeing benefits in their community through the creation of good jobs and the potential for lower bills in the future.
