Aldersgate Group reaction: Publication of the UK’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) emissions plan

Responding to the publication of the UK’s Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) emissions plan, Rachel Solomon Williams, Executive Director of the Aldersgate Group, said: “This plan is a positive step forward, by building on the ambitious emissions target announced at COP29 the UK has demonstrated a welcome commitment to ambition and provided much-needed global leadership on climate. This document provides an important overview of sectors that will play a vital part in driving down emissions, such as nature, energy and transport, and highlights how the UK’s NDC sits alongside domestic ambitions and targets. This can play an important role in unlocking much-needed international progress ahead of COP30.

“To meet this ambitious target in practice, further detail on the specific delivery plans set to be put in place is critical. The private sector is ready to play its part, but needs this certainty to provide the confidence that drives investment. The forthcoming 6th Carbon Budget Delivery Plan will be crucial in this regard, and it will need to be complemented by practical and clear cross-sectoral delivery plans in areas such as electric vehicles, heat pumps and heavy industrial decarbonisation.”
