Accelerating the transition: presenting the interim findings of the Wales Net Zero 2035 Challenge Group

Join us for our virtual event on Thursday 9th May from 2pm featuring Jane Davidson, Chair of the Wales Net Zero 2035 Challenge Group, and Professor Piers Forster, Interim Chair of the Climate Change Committee. They will discuss the role of devolved administrations in driving emissions reductions, and the Challenge Group’s initial findings and potential pathways to accelerate the delivery of net zero in Wales.

The Wales Net Zero 2035 Challenge Group was established in January 2023 to examine how Wales could reach net zero by 2035, delivering on a specific commitment in the formal Co-operation Agreement between the Welsh Government and Plaid Cymru. It includes experts from across the economy evaluating ways to accelerate progress towards net zero.

In 2015 Wales introduced the Well-being of Future Generations (Wales) Act. This landmark piece of legislation made it the only country in the world with a specific law that specifies a need to improve the well-being of future generations. Delivering on climate is a critical part of this, which led to the formation of the Net Zero 2035 Challenge Group. Devolved administrations have a crucial role to play in delivering net zero, so the Group’s findings will be an important insight into how this can be done.

The Group looks at the impact of climate action on society and the economy, considering the distribution of the costs and benefits and how any adverse effects could be mitigated. Key priority topics include:

• How could Wales feed itself by 2035?
• How could Wales meet energy needs by 2035 whilst phasing out fossil fuels?
• How could Wales heat and build homes and workplaces by 2035?
• How could people and places be connected across Wales by 2035?
• What could education, jobs and work look like across Wales by 2035?

Work is scheduled to run until summer 2024, when the findings will be launched at an event in Cardiff.
